An air compressor is a device that stores compressed air in a tank and then releases it when required, thus converting the potential energy of the compressed air into kinetic energy. Air compressors are most commonly used in industrial applications, though there are numerous simple tools that also employ the concept of a conventional air compressor. For instance, the jackhammer, which is used for drilling and digging on the roads, has a screw compressor installed inside. However, while the conventional screw compressor has a basic mechanism, industrial variants are available in many different designs.

Some of the most commonly used compressors nowadays are rotary screw compressors. Rotary screw compressors employs a couple of rotors, also known as helical screws, to compress the air and store it in a tank. The two rotors consist of a male and a female rotor. While their shapes are different, they fit each other properly. Once the compressor is turned on, the rotors start spinning, thus trapping the air in between, and because of the constant spinning, the air gets pushed back into the compressor, thus allowing for fresh air to be sucked into the rotor.

Since the rotors continue to spin regularly for as long as the screw compressor is turned on, it runs very quietly and smoothly. Usually, screw compressors in Sydney are used for industrial purposes. When compared with conventional piston-type compressors, the price of a screw compressor is significantly higher. However, one of the upsides of buying this compressor is that it’s going to run smoothly without a hitch throughout the year if you want it to. Also, if you directly compare the capacity of a piston-type compressor with a screw-type compressor, you will realise that the capacity of the latter is much bigger, thus allowing it to store more air litres of air in a second.

Oil-Free or Lubricated

Screw compressors are available in two different variants: oil free and lubricated compressors. While the basic principle of the spinning rotors is essentially the same, there is a marked difference between oil-free and lubricated compressors. As you can understand by their names, the lubricated version needs a constant injection of oil to continue running smoothly. On the other hand, the rotors in the oil-free version are made from a much more superior material and don’t have any space between them, though they don’t touch each other. That’s why oil-free compressors are the more expensive version.

Which One Do You Need?

With so many different versions to choose from, it can be a bit difficult for someone to make the right choice about which compressor is ideal to their needs. That’s why it’s important for you to first do a bit of research or talk to an industrial supplier about which compressor fits your budget and needs. It’s very important that you discuss all of these things before buying a new compressor. Larger compressors are also slightly difficult to install.
