Shades when working with putty ceilings: an art for professional roofer

RoofNo matter how high and expensive the composition of the roofing mastic that was purchased, if the technology of its application is not followed, the operational period is significantly reduced. Depending on the angle of the roof, a different number of layers of putty and special reinforcing pads are made.

In addition to the main roof area, there are several roof elements that require the application of additional layers. Therefore, for high quality Asphalt Roofing insulation, professional must apply 2 additional layers of reinforcement. But in the union of flat areas with verticals (walls, ventilation boxes, etc.), it is not only necessary to apply another 2 layers of bituminous putty, but also to pour fine fraction gravel on it and sink it completely into it.

Putty classification

Putty ceilings can be divided into several types – reinforced non-reinforced and combined, as well as by the method of use of the composition for heat and cold. Cold putty for ceilings incorporates organic solvents. This allows you to use it without heating, if the air temperature is not below +5 degree C. If this composition also has polymer components, this considerably improves its performance.

How to use roofing putty

The first is preparatory work. All trash is removed from the roof surface and, if possible, washed with water to remove dust. Then, depending on the angle of inclination of the ceiling, put putty or pouring and leveling on the surface, or painting with a brush.

Putty works hot or cold depending on the type of composition chosen. In the second case, it is necessary to prepare a portable gas burner that can heat the bituminous putty to the desired temperature and maintain it throughout the work. The thickness of the layer should be about 1 mm, but its number depends directly on the angle of inclination of the roof: the smaller it is, the larger they are. But it is important not to forget that before applying the subsequent layers, the previous one must be completely dry, which takes at least a day.

For greater mechanical strength, the gravel is poured over the top layer of putty immediately after the application and is completely embedded. If reinforcement layers are required, then fiberglass is used for them.

Conclusion: Putty costs for roofs

Roofing putty is a versatile and multifunctional material. Not only does it create a high resistance and moisture coating on flat roofs, it also saves time and money at work. The total cost will be significantly lower than with the use of modern roll materials, it is this factor that still keeps these products at the peak of popularity. Putty ceilings are demanded not only for jobs with small roofs, but also for large objects, such as shops, kindergartens and schools.
